Better Mastering Starts With File Preparation

A great mix can lose hours in a mastering revision round for a reason that has nothing to do with tone, compression, or loudness: the wrong file was sent. Mastering file preparation is where you make sure the engineer receives a clean, intentional representation of your mix, not a half-finished export with hidden processing, clipped peaks, and missing instructions.

This is not busywork. A properly prepared file gives the mastering engineer room to make decisions. A rushed export forces them to spend time identifying problems that should have been addressed before delivery. Whether you are sending music to a dedicated mastering engineer or preparing a release yourself in Studio One, Pro Tools, Cubase, Logic Pro, or Ableton Live, the same principle applies: deliver the mix, not the confusion around it.

What Your Mastering Engineer Needs From You

The standard deliverable is a stereo mix file at the same sample rate and bit depth as your working session. If your song was recorded and mixed at 48 kHz, export at 48 kHz. Do not convert it to 44.1 kHz just because you expect the final release to land on streaming services. Sample-rate conversion can happen later, when it is actually needed and under controlled conditions.

For bit depth, 24-bit or 32-bit floating point is usually the right choice. A 32-bit float export is particularly useful if your DAW supports it because it preserves a wide range of level information. That said, it does not repair clipping created by a limiter, overdriven plug-in, or overloaded bus. The file can technically contain extra headroom while still sounding damaged.

Use WAV or AIFF unless the mastering engineer specifically requests another format. MP3, AAC, and other lossy formats are for listening and distribution, not for mastering. Their encoding removes information and can introduce artifacts that become more obvious after processing.

Before you export, confirm these basics:

  • The file starts at the exact same point for every mix version, usually bar 1 beat 1 or timecode 00:00:00.
  • The export includes the full decay of reverbs, delays, and sustained instruments.
  • No channel, mix bus, or export meter is clipping.
  • The file has been auditioned from beginning to end after export, not just trusted because the bounce completed.

That last point saves more projects than people think. A wrong output selection, an automation change, a muted track, or a missing sidechain can survive unnoticed until someone else opens the file.

Mastering File Preparation Starts at the Mix Bus

The most common mistake is treating mastering as a rescue operation. If the vocal is buried, the kick is swallowing the bass, or the chorus needs more impact, fix it in the mix. A mastering engineer works with the finished stereo file. They can enhance balance and translate the record across playback systems, but they cannot independently turn down a hi-hat or rebuild a vocal automation pass from a two-track.

Your mix bus deserves a clear decision before export. Some producers mix through a bus compressor, tape emulation, EQ, or limiter because those processors are part of the sound they built the mix around. Others place them on the master channel only to make rough references louder. These are not the same situation.

If a mix bus processor is essential to the character of the record, keep it on. If it is there only to chase level, remove it before the master export. A limiter pushing the song to competitive loudness can flatten transients and leave the mastering engineer with little room to work. You do not need to hit a specific LUFS target before mastering. You need a mix that sounds good and is not being unnecessarily crushed.

There is no magic headroom number that makes a mix “mastering-ready.” Leaving several dB below 0 dBFS is a sensible working practice, but clean peaks matter more than chasing a rule. A mix peaking at -6 dBFS is not automatically better than one peaking at -2 dBFS. The key is to avoid clipping and excessive limiting while preserving the sound you intended.

If you are uncertain, send two clearly labeled versions: one with your mix bus processing and one without it. Do not make the engineer guess which is the real mix. Include a short note explaining which version reflects your intent.

Print Effects That Belong to the Record

Commit creative choices that define the production. If the vocal delay throws, reverse reverb, filtered telephone effect, or exaggerated distortion are part of the song, they should be printed into the mix. Those are arrangement and production decisions, not mastering decisions.

The same goes for effects returns. A common home-studio error is exporting a mix with an external effects bus disabled, a send set to pre-fader by accident, or a hardware insert that does not print correctly during offline bounce. If you use external gear, test the export method early. Depending on your DAW and hardware routing, a real-time bounce may be safer than an offline export.

Be careful with automatic normalization. Turn it off unless it serves a deliberate purpose in your workflow. Normalization changes level, and level affects how you perceive compression, saturation, and tonal balance. Your mastering engineer needs to hear the mix at the level you approved, not a DAW-adjusted version.

Name Files So Nothing Gets Lost

A folder full of files named “final_mix.wav,” “final_mix_2.wav,” and “final_mix_ACTUALFINAL.wav” is a preventable problem. Clear file names reduce mistakes when you are managing revisions, alternate edits, clean versions, instrumentals, and release deadlines.

Use a consistent format such as Artist_SongTitle_MixVersion_SampleRate_BitDepth.wav. For example: Northline_StayClose_MixV3_48k_24bit.wav. If there is a mix revision after feedback, call it V4. Do not overwrite V3 and hope everyone remembers what changed.

Keep related files together in one organized project delivery folder. If you are providing a radio edit, instrumental, TV track, clean version, or acapella, label each one plainly. Every alternate should begin at the same timestamp and have the same overall length unless the arrangement intentionally differs. That alignment matters for mastering consistency and for later distribution, editing, and sync work.

Reference Tracks Help, but Instructions Matter More

A reference track can tell a mastering engineer what you admire about a release: low-end weight, vocal presence, width, punch, or overall intensity. It should not be treated as a demand to copy another record exactly. Different arrangements, vocals, recording quality, and genre conventions all affect what a comparable master can realistically do.

Give useful notes in direct language. Say that the vocal should stay forward without becoming harsh, that the kick needs to retain impact on small speakers, or that the record should feel open rather than aggressively loud. Mention anything intentional that could be mistaken for an error, such as a lo-fi intro, mono verse, unusual panning, or a deliberately distorted vocal.

Also identify the intended release context. A streaming single, a vinyl-oriented album sequence, a club track, and a podcast intro do not necessarily need the same approach. If tracks belong to an EP or album, provide the running order and intended gaps between songs. Mastering is partly about how tracks work together, not only how one song performs alone.

Do One Final Reality Check

Listen to the exported file outside your DAW before sending it. Use headphones, studio monitors, and one ordinary consumer system if possible. You are not trying to restart the whole mix because a phone speaker lacks sub-bass. You are checking for obvious translation issues, clicks, abrupt endings, missing parts, and unintended distortion.

Then compare the export against your in-session mix at matched volume. Louder almost always feels better for a moment, which is why level matching matters. If the bounced file feels different, find out why before it goes anywhere. Check export settings, master-bus routing, dither options, plug-in oversampling behavior, and whether a processor changes sound during offline rendering.
